International Yoga Day 2025: A Global Pause to Reconnect

In this blog

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”

-The Bhagavad Gita

It is a precious gift from India to the world. It’s been keeping us healthy in all aspects of life physically, mentally, and spiritually for such a long time.

To recognise the spirit of yoga, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year, and this year it marks its 11th anniversary with the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

The theme reminds us that our wellness lies in the lap of nature. As much as we take care of ourselves, it is even more important for us to take care of our planet’s health as well.

In this blog, let’s explore what this day is all about: its history, importance, and how you can take part in this to make this day memorable.

History of International Yoga Day:

The First International Yoga Day began with a big moment in 2014.

Then on September 27, 2014, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the idea of celebrating a special movement for yoga day at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

And, seeing the benefits of yoga for a healthier and happier life, the UN agreed to establish this movement, and now, every year, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21st.

But why June 21?

Because it is the summer solstice, which highlights the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day marks a very deep meaning for yogic traditions, and it is very important in many cultures.

That’s why every year on June 21, people around the world come together to celebrate yoga. The First International Yoga Day was celebrated in 2015.

People from more than 170 countries around the world came together to take part in this mission to keep yoga alive in this modern era.

History of International Yoga Day

Theme for International Yoga Day 2025:

The theme for world yoga day 2025 is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

It simply reminds us that caring for our body and mind is also a way of caring for the Earth. Adopting a healthy lifestyle doesn’t just heal us…..it helps heal the world around us too.

How? When we practice yoga, our mind and thoughts get better. We feel light, active and we make sure to live a life that is peaceful for everyone around us, even our mother nature.

We become more aware of our thoughts, actions, and surroundings in many ways. This awareness often leads to:

  1. Mindful Actions: Yoga encourages us to live with limited and natural resources, which leads to less waste and pollution.
  2. Healthier Choices: A healthy lifestyle often includes consuming natural, plant-based foods and more activity during the day. All of which are better for the environment.
  3. Connection with Nature:  Yoga teaches us that we are a part of nature, just like a mother nurtures her baby. Nature nurtures us as well with all the resources she can provide, so it’s our responsibility to use them wisely.
  4. Inner Peace = Better Decisions: When our thoughts are clear, we are able to think better. We are more likely to act with care towards people, animals, and the planet.
  5. Healthy Sustainable Habits: With yoga, you can build healthy and long-term positive habits that naturally support eco-friendly living.

Global Celebrations and Participation for Yoga Day:

International Yoga Day is celebrated all over the world. From large crowds in India to many countries in the world, this is a festival of peace and calmness.

Governments, schools, yoga studios, and NGOs everywhere celebrate this day. Even world-famous places like the Eiffel Tower, Times Square, and the Sydney Opera House also host yoga gatherings and motivate people to join and take a step forward for their health and wellness.

Every June, almost everyone finds themselves asking, When is Yoga Day? That’s when it hits us: we genuinely want to take care of our health… We just struggle to stay consistent.

But if we try to add these small habits into our daily lives, in no time, ‘yoga near me’ can transform into ‘yoga you carry within.’ That’s when it’ll no longer just be a habit…it will represent who YOU are.”

And it’s not always the physical presence that is needed from your end, many people also join from home through Online Yoga Classes, live sessions, and webinars. Every year a huge number of people take part in this initiative and this is clearly evident in witnessing how yoga is touching lives across cultures, countries, and time zones.

Keeping this in mind, Habuild offers Free Yoga Programs to anyone looking forward to starting their health journey with us. As we truly believe,“Wellness should not be a luxury…it should be a way of life that’s easy, accessible, and available to everyone.”

Benefits of Practicing Yoga:

If you are looking to stick to a healthy habit that you can perform every single day from the comfort of your home. Yoga can be one of the most powerful things that can fit in your schedule very easily.

A daily yoga practice helps you with a lot of benefits for your body, from gentle stretches to improving your overall flexibility, it is a game changer. It is also a very important practice for your mental health. The rising cases of anxiety and depression in India and around the world can be managed in a better way if we stick to one single habit.

Whether it is 30 minutes or 10 minutes, it’s on you. More than just an exercise, yoga is a way to care for both your body and your inner peace. That’s why World Yoga Day holds such deep meaning. It reminds us that good health, clarity, and calm are within reach if you hold on to this small habit of moving everyday.

As it makes your body more flexible and strong, it improves your breathing and heart health and helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It also supports better sleep and provides quality focus, and most importantly, it brings more calmness and emotional balance.

And hence yoga is a complete habit that supports the body, soul and mind.

Happy International Yoga Day, let’s Breathe Together:

This Yoga Day, it’s not about the pose…..it’s about the pause.

A pause to breathe.

A pause to feel.

A pause to heal

And a pause for you to just show up for yourself!

So, roll out your mat and move with us….gently, joyfully, together.
Let’s make this habit the start of something real. Because it’s your energy that brings this practice to life.

We wish you a very Happy International Yoga Day,

From yours truly, Habuild family 🙂
