Pranayamas to Improve Lung Capacity

In this blog

Motherhood is basically “Active” mode, 24/7. Sometimes it’s you running after your giggling toddler, other times it’s trying to keep up with your teenager on an adventurous vacation; staying energetic and healthy should always be your priority. But sadly, the one crucial thing that always goes overlooked is your lung capacity.

Strengthening your lungs is easier than you think. The secret? Simple, powerful tools of yoga, like pranayama. This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the supermoms of Habuild – moms who prioritised their health not just for themselves, but for more quality time with their children.

Before we take inspiration from one such supermom, you must know why lung exercises are essential, especially for moms. The short answer is that when you know how to increase lung capacity, you unlock the stamina, energy, and resilience needed to create loving memories with your children.

Why Lung Health Matters for Moms

Motherhood = non-stop movement; if your daily chores end with you feeling short of breath, or being in the hot kitchen all day makes you light-headed, your lungs are signalling for help.

Poor lung health means:

  • Fatigue.
  • Breathlessness with even mild activity.
  • Increased risk of infections.
  • Reduced energy = less quality time with your children.

But, good news: you don’t need fancy dumbbells or a membership at your local gym to practice any breathing exercise for lungs; you can make your lungs exercise at home, comfortably.

Yoga for Lungs

Pranayama is like hitting the “Reset” button for your lungs, returning their original, youthful lung capacity. Pranayama helps:

  • Increase oxygen supply to your body.
  • Expand your lung capacity.
  • Calm your nervous system.
  • Boost energy and endurance.

Even a few minutes of diaphragmatic breathing exercises practised every morning can transform you – mentally, physically, and emotionally.

How to Improve Lung Health

Improving lung health might feel like another thing on your to-do list – or even as luxurious as self-care – but it’s super important. Since your supermom duties keep you busy all day, here’s how you can easily make your lungs exercise at home:

1. Anulom Vilom

Balances breathing and strengthens lung function.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably and close your right nostril with your right thumb. Inhale through the left nostril.
  2. Then, close the left nostril with your right ring finger while releasing your right nostril and exhale through it.
  3. Repeat for the right side to complete 1 round, and practice for 5 minutes daily.

2. Bhramari

Reduces stress, calms the mind, and improves oxygen flow.

How to do it:

  1. Close your eyes and gently place your index fingers on your ears.
  2. Inhale deeply and hum softly (like a bee) while you exhale.

3. Kapalabhati:

The perfect detox for your lungs to energise your body better than your afternoon cup of chai.

How to do it:

  1. Sit tall and inhale normally.
  2. Then, forcefully exhale by pulling your stomach toward your spine.
  3. You don’t have to focus on inhaling; it will happen naturally.
  4. Practice 30 rounds, rest for 5-10 seconds, and repeat.

“Every year, I visit my daughter’s place in Boston, USA. During the visit, she takes me on hikes. I used to feel breathless and stop at half the point, and had to use a stick for help. But this year, due to continuous yoga practice for 300 days, I felt very comfortable, and could easily hike with her; as Saurabh sir tells us, breathing exercises can make climbing feel effortless when hiking. Happy to inform you that continuous yoga can do wonders. Thanks to Habuild.”
