Ukadiche Modak: A Guilt-Free Sweet for Ganesh Chaturthi

In this blog

Festivals in India are a celebration of devotion, family, and togetherness, and no celebration is ever complete without something sweet. Every festival has that one dish that instantly brings the spirit alive. For Ganesh Chaturthi, it’s the soft, melt-in-the-mouth Ukadiche Modak.

But here’s the best part,  unlike most festive treats, Modaks are made with wholesome, natural ingredients. Which means you can enjoy them as much as you like, without carrying the usual guilt that comes with sweets. Tradition, taste, and health, all in one bite.

Why Modaks Are So Loved

According to tradition, Modaks are considered Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet, which is why they are offered as the first bhog during Ganesh Chaturthi. But beyond their spiritual significance, they are also a wonderful example of how festive indulgence can be nourishing.

  • Rice flour makes the outer covering soft and easy to digest.
  • Jaggery brings natural sweetness, energy, and essential minerals.
  • Coconut adds richness while supporting immunity.
  • Cardamom ties it all together with festive aroma and digestive benefits.

Modaks are proof that celebration and health can go hand in hand.

Habuild Tip

Festivals are a time of indulgence, but choosing sweets made with wholesome ingredients keeps the joy guilt-free. Enjoy your Modaks with the thought that you’re celebrating both tradition and health.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1  cup jaggery (grated or powdered)
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 cup water

How to Make Ukadiche Modak

If you’ve never made them before, don’t worry. Here’s a simple step-by-step that will help you bring this festive sweet to your table:

Step 1: Prepare the dough

Heat water in a pan with a little ghee. Add a pinch of salt. Once it boils, add rice flour slowly, stirring well to avoid lumps. Cover for a minute, then knead into a soft, smooth dough while still slightly warm.

Step 2: Make the filling

In another pan, add a teaspoon of ghee and roast grated coconut. Slowly add jaggery and let it melt into the coconut. Finally, stir in cardamom powder for that warm, festive fragrance.

Step 3: Shape the Modak

Lightly grease a Modak mould with ghee. Press the dough inside, make a small hollow, add the filling, and then close and twist to shape. Don’t have a mould? You can also pinch and shape them by hand.

Step 4: Steam the Modaks

Place them in a steamer for 10-12 minutes. This is when your kitchen turns into a festival; the aroma alone is worth the wait.

Step 5: Serve and enjoy

Soft, melt-in-the-mouth Modaks are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha and shared with your family.

Tips for Perfect Modaks

Making Modaks at home is simple, but a few small tricks can make all the difference. These little details are what turn a good Modak into a truly melt-in-the-mouth experience. Here are some tips to help you get them just right:

  • Always knead the rice dough while it’s slightly warm; that’s the secret to soft Modaks.
  • Don’t overcook the filling; jaggery should melt and coat the coconut, not burn.
  • If you don’t have a Modak mould, shape them by hand; they’ll look rustic, but taste just as divine.
  • Steam them on banana leaves if possible; it adds a beautiful aroma.
